A systematic review of microclimate and outdoor thermal comfort studies in Australia and New Zealand

PurposeGiven the distinct and unique climates in these countries, research conducted in other parts of the world may not be directly applicable. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct research tailored to the specific climatic conditions of Australia and New Zealand to ensure accuracy and relevance.Design/methodology/approachGiven population growth, urban expansions and predicted climate change, researchers should provide a deeper understanding of microclimatic conditions and outdoor thermal comfort in Australia and New Zealand. The study’s objectives can be classified into three categories: (1) to analyze previous research works on urban microclimate and outdoor thermal comfort in Australia and New Zealand; (2) to highlight the gaps in urban microclimate studies and (3) to provide a summary of recommendations for the neglected but critical aspects of urban microclimate.FindingsThe findings of this study indicate that, despite the various climate challenges in these countries, there has been limited investigation. According to the selected papers, Melbourne has the highest number of microclimatic studies among various cities. It is a significant area for past researchers to examine people’s thermal perceptions in residential areas during the summer through field measurements and surveys. An obvious gap in previous research is investigating the impacts of various urban contexts on microclimatic conditions through software simulations over the course of a year and considering the predicted future climate changes in these countries.Originality/valueThis paper aims to review existing studies in these countries, provide a foundation for future research, identify research gaps and highlight areas requiring further investigation.

Summer outdoor thermal comfort assessment in city squares—A case study of cold dry winter, hot summer climate zone

Human thermal perception varies with climate. The Dwa climate zone covers vast areas. Conducting outdoor thermal comfort (OTC) studies here would benefit energy efficiency and the economy. However, since OTC research methods are not standardized, different research methods hamper comparing studies in the Dwa climate. This paper aims to determine the summer OTC of typical Dalian squares in the Dwa climate. Dalian is located in the cold A zone (2A) of the China Building Climate Division. The thermal environment of three typical squares was field measured, and a questionnaire survey of the residents was conducted. 33.2 % of Dalian residents evaluated the thermal environment as neutral, and 39.3 % considered it comfortable. And psychological perception and physical perception were not the same. Multiple methods were used to calculate outdoor thermal benchmarks and calibrate thermal stress for three thermal indexes, SET*, PET, and UTCI. Furthermore, PET, with a prediction accuracy of 25.3 %, was determined to be the best indicator applicable to Dalian in the summer. Finally, a comparison of studies under the Dwa climate zone, including Tianjin and Harbin, reconfirmed the mobility of the human thermal zone. These findings are precious and can contribute significantly to ensuring the sustainability of the outdoor environment.

A study of waterside microenvironmental factors and their effects on summer outdoor thermal comfort in a Cfa-climate campus

Outdoor thermal comfort (OTC) studies explore outdoor subjects’ responses to their thermal environment, usually evaluated using the neutral temperature (NT). This study investigated the influences of microenvironmental factors around a waterbody on thermal perceptions, using questionnaires and meteorological measurements at the Central Lake of Southwest University of Science and Technology (SWUST) in Mianyang. Microenvironmental factors included sky view factor (SVF) and distance from the lake (DFL). It was found that people felt most comfortable in the shade of trees although some volunteers voted artificial canopy as their preferred thermal adaptation element. In addition, a linear regression yielded an NT of 28.44 °C in Mianyang during the summer of 2022. There were NT variations among different measurement sites (e.g., on the east shore, it was 28.18 °C on the waterside, 27.11 °C away from the lake, and 25.53 °C far from the lake; while it was 27.57 °C under the tree crown, 25.11 °C on the lawn, and 29.13 °C in the square). This variation may be due to human adaptation towards microenvironmental factors and their effects on microclimate. The variation in thermal responses owing to microenvironmental differences (different NTs at various types of sites) might be a novel finding in the field of OTC. This study provides important directions for microenvironment design in the future for OTC improvement.

Outdoor Thermal Comfort Optimization in a Cold Climate to Mitigate the Level of Urban Heat Island in an Urban Area

Climatic and micro-climatic phenomena such as summer heat waves and Urban Heat Island (UHI) are increasingly endangering the city’s livability and safety. The importance of urban features on the UHI effect encourages us to consider the configuration of urban elements to improve cities’ sustainability and livability. Most solutions are viable when a city redevelops and new areas are built to focus on aspects such as optimum design and the orientation of building masses and streets, which affect thermal comfort. This research looks beyond outdoor thermal comfort studies using UHI data and geoprocessing techniques in Tallinn, Estonia. This study supposes that designing urban canyons with proper orientation helps to mitigate the UHI effect by maximizing outdoor thermal comfort at the pedestrian level during hot summer days. In addition, optimizing the orientation of buildings makes it possible to create shaded and cooler areas for pedestrians, reducing surface temperature, which may create more comfortable and sustainable urban environments with lower energy demands and reduced heat-related health risks. This research aims to generate valuable insights into how urban environments can be designed and configured to improve sustainability, livability, and outdoor thermal comfort for pedestrians. According to the study results, researchers can identify the most effective interventions to achieve these objectives by leveraging UHI data and geoprocessing techniques and using CFD simulations. This evaluation is beneficial in guiding urban planners and architects in proposing mitigation solutions to enhance thermal comfort in cities and creating suitable conditions for approved thermal comfort levels. Results of the study show that in the location used for the survey, Tallinn, Estonia, the orientation of West-East offers the optimum level of comfort regarding thermal comfort and surface temperature in the urban environment.

A Review on the Impacts of Urban Heat Islands on Outdoor Thermal Comfort

The worsening urban heat island (UHI) effect poses a great challenge to the thermal comfort of people outdoors. However, there has not been a summary of the mechanisms by which UHI affects outdoor thermal comfort (OTC). This paper reviews the commonly used OTC evaluation indexes, data collection methods, and mitigation measures and discusses the relationship between UHI and OTC. The review is limited to peer-reviewed journal publications found in five databases: Science Direct, Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed, and Web of Science. The review results indicate that physiological equivalent temperature (PET), universal thermal climate index (UTCI), and wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) are the most widely used indexes in outdoor thermal comfort studies. The data collection methods mainly include questionnaire surveys, measurement, simulation, and formula calculation. There are four main approaches to mitigating the UHI effect in order to improve the comfort of people outdoors: vegetation strategies, water strategies, urban planning strategies, and material strategies. Future research can focus on developing OTC research methods and indexes and combine thermal comfort with visual comfort, auditory comfort, etc. to better evaluate the overall comfort.

Direct and indirect effects of multisensory modalities on visitor’ s thermal comfort in an urban park in a humid-hot climate

ABSTRACT Thermal comfort in outdoor spaces is of vital importance to human health and well-being, and affects the livability of cities. In a humid-hot region with elevated temperatures, it is difficult to improve the thermal experience of urban residents by changing objective conditions such as the microclimate. This study created a set of experience indices in different dimensions including visual, auditory, and olfactory perceptions and psychological cognitions, to explore the influencing factors and mechanisms of visitor’s thermal comfort in an urban park. We found that visual, auditory, and olfactory experience indices and psychological cognition indices were both strongly correlated with thermal comfort (Pearson correlation coefficients were above 0.3). By analyzing a survey data with a structural equation model, we found that Visual, auditory, and olfactory experiences have a complete, mediating effect on thermal comfort. Explicitly, visual, auditory, and olfactory perceptions affect thermal comfort through two mediating variables: thermal sensation and psychological cognitions. In turn, thermal sensation and psychological cognitions have a direct effect on visitor’s thermal comfort. Psychological cognitions has the largest direct effect on thermal comfort. Quantitatively, a 1-unit increase in psychological cognitions produces an increase of 0.601 units in thermal comfort. A potential approach is to improve multisensory modalities that affect necessary sensory perception and psychological cognitions of visitors. The findings of this study provide a valuable reference for the planning and design of recreational spaces in humid-hot regions and for the studies of outdoor thermal comfort.

Comparing different recalibrated methods for estimating mean radiant temperature in outdoor environment

Mean radiant temperature (MRT) is a significant variable for outdoor thermal comfort studies. Two measurement-based methods can estimate MRT, one is globe thermometer – cheap, easily-applied but relatively inaccurate, another is integral radiation measurement method (also known as the six-directional method) - accurate but expensive. Due to low-cost and convenience, the globe thermometer has been widely used. Previous studies have improved its estimation accuracy by recalibrating the convection coefficients in the ISO method. Thus, it is pending to cross-compare the performance of these recalibrated methods.This study aims to investigate the transferability of the recalibrated methods for estimating MRT in outdoor environment. First, field measurement was conducted in a subtropical city, Hong Kong. MRT was obtained through two methods: globe thermometer and integral radiation method. Second, the existing recalibrated convection coefficients were summarized, and the localized convection coefficient was recalibrated. Third, all recalibrated methods were compared for their performance. The impacts of measurement locations, devices, analysis time intervals were examined.The results showed that the newly recalibrated method achieved the lowest estimation errors (RMSE = 3.84 °C). Other recalibrated methods presented higher RMSE (3.84–17.52 °C), similar as conventional ISO method (7.91 °C). Especially for open spaces, the coefficients from other cities should be cautiously applied when the accuracy requirement is less than ±2 °C. Kestrel and Grey globe are more recommended in subtropical cities. This study shed light on the application of globe thermometer for outdoor environment, and emphasized the necessity in recalibrating the convection coefficients locally.

Assessment and synergy analysis of outdoor thermal comfort and thermal infrared remote sensing for urban heat island studies

The aim of this research is to explore the potentialities and limits of the integration of remote sensing biophysical data (land surface temperature) in the outdoor thermal comfort studies. Accordingly, by examining correlations between land surface temperature and air temperature, and using respectively remote sensing satellite data MODIS and different weather stations archives alongside questionnaire surveys. Currently, the parameters of thermal comfort indices are usually calculated using the data from one, or few permanent or portable ground-based weather stations. Due to the lack of adequate distribution of weather stations, those calculations generally do not accurately represent the alteration of thermal comfort, through time and space. Nevertheless, it has been essentially proved that despite strong tendencies between in-situ measured parameters and remotely sensed ones, various elements need to be studied (e.g., location, land surface type, vegetation, and elevation). Finally, preliminary results confirm that the proposed linear approaches are providing considerable and promising performance suitable for future specific situations and studies purposes.

Outdoor performance of the black globe temperature sensor on a hot and humid tropical region

ABSTRACT A crucial variable to evaluate thermal comfort is the mean radiant temperature (Tmrt). In this paper we evaluate the performance of the 150 mm black globe thermometer to provide reliable Tmrt values for outdoor settings in Singapore. Accurate Tmrt values are calculated by the method of integral radiation measurements. Based on these, the mean convection coefficient of the black globe has been re-calibrated. Results show an improvement in the estimation of Tmrt with the new coefficient in comparison with the default version suggested in ISO7726:1998. Increasing the averaging periods of the measured variables improved the performance of the derived mean convective coefficients to estimate Tmrt. During clear skies day and for 10-min averaged data, RMSE for Tmrt reduce to 3.9 °C (7.4 °C for ISO7726:1998 coefficient) with an overestimation on high incoming solar radiation periods and an underestimation during the morning and evening (low solar elevation). During overcast dry conditions an underestimation of Tmrt is also expected which is higher in the rain/wet periods. The mean convective coefficient presented in this work can provide improved estimations of Tmrt relevant for outdoor thermal comfort studies in hot and humid tropical climates like Singapore.

Biomimicry-Based Strategies for Urban Heat Island Mitigation: A Numerical Case Study under Tropical Climate.

In recent years, demographic growth has caused cities to expand their urban areas, increasing the risk of overheating, creating insurmountable microclimatic conditions within the urban area, which is why studies have been carried out on the urban heat island effect (UHI) and its mitigation. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the cooling potential in the application of strategies based on biomimicry for the microclimate in a historical heritage city of Panama. For this, three case studies (base case, case 1, and case 2) of outdoor thermal comfort were evaluated, in which the Envi-met software was used to emulate and evaluate the thermal performance of these strategies during March (highest temperature month) and October (rainier month). The strategies used were extracted from the contrast of zebra skin, human skin, evaporative cooling, and ant skin. The results showed a reduction of 2.8 °C in the air temperature at 11:00, the radiant temperature decreased by 2.2 °C, and the PET index managed to reduce the thermal comfort indicator among its categories. The importance of thinking based on biomimicry in sustainable strategies is concluded; although significant changes were obtained, high risks of discomfort persist due to the layout and proximity of the building.

Outdoor Thermal Comfort Study on a District Level as Part of the Housing Programs in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, United Arab Emirates

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has witnessed fast growth in urban development in the past four decades. A plan to build 7270 houses by 2021 has been initiated by the local authorities. Different local sustainability guidelines are being implemented, including the Public Realm Manual in Abu Dhabi. These local guidelines are tailored to consider the hot and arid climate of the UAE as well as the applied materials, the inclusion of greenery, shading devices, etc. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Al Ain are cities that have imposed the application of such guidelines. Additionally, the newly developed housing programs match the governmental plan. To understand the effect of these design programs on the outdoor thermal comfort (OTC), further investigations are necessary for each city. The most widely built prototype is detached villas, which result in untreated waste areas without shading or greenery. In the old local neighborhoods, Arabic houses were built next to each other to maximize the shading and to ease pedestrians’ walkability. This study aims to examine the districts where the housing programs are applied and to determine the most effective strategy to minimize the outdoor air temperatures and enhance walkability. The methodology implements the following processes in order: district analyses of the buildings as well as the externally applied materials, microclimate site measurements, ENVI-met (main software used) models of the current and future scenarios, results and recommendations. The strategies have different impacts in both cites due to the microclimate and other conditions.

A Field Investigation on Adaptive Thermal Comfort in an Urban Environment Considering Individuals’ Psychological and Physiological Behaviors in a Cold-Winter of Wuhan

To date, studies of outdoor thermal comfort (OTC) have focused primarily on physical factors, tending to overlook the relevance of individual adaptation to microclimate parameters through psychological and physiological behaviors. These adaptations can significantly affect the use of urban and outdoor spaces. The study presented here investigated these issues, with a view to aiding sustainable urban development. Measurements of OTC were taken at a university campus and in urban spaces. Simultaneously, a large-scale survey of thermal adaptability was conducted. Two groups were selected for investigation in a cold-winter-and-hot-summer (CWHS) region; respondents came from humid subtropical (Cfa) and hot desert (BWh) climates, according to the Köppen Climate Classification (KCC). Results showed that: (1) neutral physiological equivalent temperature (NPET) and preferred PET for people from the Cfa (PCfa) and BWh (PBWh) groups could be obtained with KCC; (2) PCfa adaptability behaviors were, subjectively, more adjustable than PBWh; (3) Clothing affected neutral temperature (NT), where NT reduced by approximately 0.5 °C when clothing insulation rose 0.1 Clo; and (4) Gender barely affected thermal acceptance vote (TAV) or thermal comfort vote (TCV) and there was a substantial relationship between thermal sensation, NT, and PET. These findings suggest ‘feels like’ temperature and comfort may be adjusted via relationships between microclimate parameters.

Convective heat loss from computational thermal manikin subject to outdoor wind environments

Urban residents are increasingly encouraged to go outside for recreational and relaxing purposes, which may improve personal health and reduce building energy consumption. Therefore, it is important to understand the heat transfer between human body and surrounding urban outdoor environments. This study aims to predict the convective heat loss from a human body subject to urban outdoor wind environments. Firstly, the effects of the wind velocity and turbulent conditions on the convective heat loss from human body are investigated through a computational thermal manikin model, which is validated against published experimental data. Subsequently, wind data from onsite measurements in the city of Sydney, Australia is used to predict human body's convective heat loss using numerically obtained empirical correlations. The present result shows that the convective heat loss of most body segments increases with increasing wind velocity and turbulent intensity and decreasing turbulence length scale. Empirical correlations for predicting the convective heat transfer coefficients as a function of the wind velocity, turbulent intensity and turbulence length scale are derived based on simple-geometry assumptions. It is found that, at a given wind velocity with the ranges of the turbulence conditions from the field measurements, the variations between the high and low values of the convective heat transfer coefficient can be up to 67%. The results of this study demonstrate the significance of capturing the turbulent wind conditions for accurately predicting heat loss for outdoor thermal comfort studies.

Comparing impact of multi-factor planning layouts in residential areas on summer thermal comfort based on orthogonal design of experiments (ODOE)

The previous studies of outdoor thermal comfort mainly focused on the micro-climate changes caused by urban morphological factors such as street aspect ratio, plot ratio, sky view factor (SVF) et al. As an essential routine to mitigate urban heat island (UHI), vegetation was also discussed by researchers to explore the optimal distribution. However, under the same determined quantity, there is still a blank of the study in how significant each layout factor is to thermal comfort, including the building layout, the pavement layout, and the vegetation layout. This paper followed an orthogonal design of experiment (ODEO) to create various multi-factor layouts in the case of northern China, thoroughly analyzing simulated results based on Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET) to explain the internal mechanism. Results show that in high-rise residential areas, the layout significance ranking affecting thermal comfort in summer is: buildings, vegetation, pavement. The optimal arrangement is a layout combination of the scattered-form buildings, the grid-form pavement, and the southern vegetation, which can reduce PET of 6.3% maximally during the day. We also found that wind maps are highly consistent with PET maps due to its heat dissipation capability. Another reason for the high PET value is the solar radiation trapping effect, which should be considered with building shade when discussing the relationship between multi-layouts and thermal comfort. The arrangement method can provide a new research direction of urban micro-climate in the future and thus can be employed by decision-makers in the early planning stage.

From energy performative to livable Mediterranean cities: An annual outdoor thermal comfort and energy balance cross-climatic typological study

With the rise of awareness of health and well-being in cities, urban environmental analysis should expand from energy performance to new environmental quality-based considerations. The limited potential to annually evaluate outdoor thermal comfort, predominant among these considerations, has restricted the exploration of the interrelations between urban morphology and annual energy performance. This study aims to bridge this gap by capitalizing on the new capabilities of Eddy3D – a Grasshopper plugin which enables effective calculations of hourly microclimatic wind factors via OpenFOAM which in turn are used to generate annual outdoor thermal comfort plots. Using this method, a parametric study was conducted for different typology and density scenarios in three different hot climatic contexts in Israel. The automated analytical workflow evaluated a total of 60 design iterations for their energy balance, outdoor thermal comfort autonomy (OTCA) and self-shading levels using the shade index. The high correlation found here between the annual shade index and the OTCA, across all climatic contexts, shows the potential of the shade index to serve as an effective indicator, in these contexts, for comparative or optimization outdoor comfort studies. Further results are both the superiority of the courtyard typology in both energy and outdoor comfort studies, and the contrasting impact of higher density on the annual energy balance (lower performance) and outdoor thermal comfort (higher performance) in hot climates. The annual plots of both the energy balance and OTCA reveal various seasonal and monthly trends in the three different climatic zones which can lead to localized and seasonal urban design strategies.

Behavioural Perspectives of Outdoor Thermal Comfort in Urban Areas: A Critical Review

The thermal characteristics of outdoor urban spaces and the street networks connecting them are vital to the assessment of the liveability and sustainability of cities. When urban spaces are thermally comfortable, city dwellers spend more time outdoors. This has several benefits for human health and wellbeing, also reducing indoor energy consumption and contributing to local economy. Studies on outdoor thermal comfort have highlighted the need to develop interdisciplinary frameworks that integrate physical, physiological, psychological, and social parameters to assist urban planners and designers in design decisions. In this paper, an extensive literature review of outdoor thermal comfort studies over the past decade was undertaken, including both rational and adaptive thermal comfort approaches, from the contextualize the behaviour perspectives related to the use of urban space. Consequently, the paper suggests a comprehensive framework for evaluating the relationship between the quantitative and qualitative parameters linking the microclimatic environment with subjective thermal assessment and social behaviour. The framework aims to contribute to the development of exclusive thermal comfort standards for outdoor urban settings.

Dynamic response of pedestrian thermal comfort under outdoor transient conditions.

Outdoor thermal comfort studies have proved that urban design has a great influence on pedestrians' thermal comfort and that its assessment helps one to understand the quality and usage of the pedestrian environment. However, the majority of outdoor thermal comfort studies perceive pedestrian thermal comfort as "static". The dynamic multiple uses of urban spaces and the highly inhomogeneous urban morphology in high-density cities of the tropics are seldom considered, which leads to a lack of understanding about how pedestrians respond to the changes of the outdoor environment. This study contributes to the understanding of the dynamic thermal comfort using a longitudinal survey that was conducted to obtain information about how thermal sensation changes throughout the walking route and how it is affected by micro-meteorological conditions and the urban geometry. The large variations in micro-meteorological conditions throughout the walking routes are predominantly influenced by the urban geometry. Additionally, the spatial pattern of thermal sensation varies based on the weather conditions, emphasizing the need to account for such variations in the assessment of pedestrian thermal comfort. The results also show that thermal sensation was associated with participants' short-term thermal experience (2-3min) and that the urban geometry plays an important role in the time-lag effect of meteorological variables on thermal sensation. The findings of this study contribute to improving urban geometry design in order to mitigate the thermal discomfort and create a better pedestrian environment in high-density cities.

Outdoor thermal sensation and logistic regression analysis of comfort range of meteorological parameters in Hong Kong

Warm and hot days account for most of the time in Hong Kong. Outdoor thermal comfort studies in Hong Kong should give its first consideration to warm and hot days. This study presents investigations about thermal comfort through 1600 human subject responses from the onsite survey with concurrent meteorological parameter measurements. Probit analysis was used for searching the thermal neutral range of Hong Kong residents in a year span. Logistic regression was used for locating the meteorological parameter ranges for thermal neutral and comfort conditions. It is shown that people had difficulties defining their actual thermal feelings near the thermal neutral status when being asked to use the nine-point thermal sensation scale. Obvious thermal adaptation effect for thermal neutral conditions were observed among Hong Kong residents over the seasons in a year. The transitional seasons had a wider thermal neutral range than that of winter and summer. Summer had the narrowest thermal neutral range. Wind and solar radiation had an interaction effect with air temperature in determining thermal sensation and thermal comfort. Wind can effectively offset the negative effect of solar radiation in summer when the air temperature was lower than 31 °C. The thermal comfort condition allowed a higher limit of solar radiation than the thermal neutral condition when the air temperature was lower than 31 °C. The investigations in this study provide some unique insights into the way to assess urban thermal comfort in the building design stage.

Global pattern of human thermal adaptation and limit of thermal neutrality: Systematic analysis of outdoor neutral temperature

Neutral temperature is the temperature at which people feel neither cool nor warm. Previous regional studies have found that neutral temperature can change with season, which can be attributed to the psychological adaptation effect of people. However, few studies have examined whether the adaptation pattern can be observed across wide geographical and climatic regions. In some cases, outdoor comfort surveys cannot determine neutral temperatures because thermal sensation votes obtained do not reach neutrality. It reflects that thermal adaptation has a temperature limit, and thermal neutrality can hardly be achieved outside the limit. This study aims to establish linear models between neutral temperature and background temperature (survey‐period and climate normal) using neutral temperature data reported in international studies. The limit of thermal neutrality will also be determined in the best‐fit model. The neutral temperature data in 19 empirical outdoor thermal comfort studies published between 2009 and 2017 were used in the linear regression models. Survey‐period mean air temperature was found to be the best predictor of neutral temperature (R2 = 0.539, p = 0.007). The effect of long‐term acclimatization may be less important than it was previously thought because survey‐period temperature can explain over a half of the variability in neutral temperature. The temperature limit of thermal neutrality was defined by the lowest and the highest neutral temperatures in the best‐fit model; the limit was between 12.9 and 32.3 °C in air temperature. The findings indicate that the adaptation effect has a worldwide pattern as neutral temperature always lies closely to background air temperature.

Models of Pedestrian Adaptive Behaviour in Hot Outdoor Public Spaces

Abstract Current studies of outdoor thermal comfort are limited to calculating thermal indices or interviewing people. The first method does not take into account the way people use this space, whereas the second one is limited to one particular study area. Simulating people’s thermal perception along with their activities in public urban spaces will help architects and city planners to test their concepts and to design smarter and more liveable cities. In this paper, we propose an agent-based modelling approach to simulate people’s adaptive behaviour in space. Two levels of pedestrian behaviour are considered: reactive and proactive, and three types of thermal adaptive behaviour of pedestrians are modelled with single-agent scenarios: speed adaptation, thermal attraction/repulsion and vision-motivated route alternation. An heat stress parameter of the agent is calculated during the simulation, and pedestrian behaviour is analysed in terms of its ability to reduce the accumulated heat stress. This work is the first step towards the human component in urban microclimate simulation systems. We use these simulations to drive the design of real-life experiments, which will help calibrating model parameters, such as the heat-speed response, thermal sensitivity and admissible turning angles.
